Pets as Presents: A Holiday No-No

Posted on 2011-11-10 10:52:13

With the holidays rapidly approaching, you may consider giving your friend, partner or children a pet as a gift. At Churchland Animal Clinic, our veterinary clinic in Portsmouth, Virginia, we recommend against giving pets as gifts. While a dog or cat may be great fun at first, after a few weeks or months, the novelty will wear off and the new pet owner may not be prepared for the responsibility. New pet owners may not be prepared to schedule appointments with the veterinarian, feed the pet, or pay for the necessary vaccinations.

Pet's Health Comes First, Says the Veterinarian

Our Portsmouth veterinarian would like to remind you that the health of the pet should be your primary concern. When you give a pet as a gift, especially as a surprise gift, you may not be considering the pet's overall health and wellness, but rather the joy on the potential pet owner's face when he discovers the gift.Portsmouth veterinarian advises against giving pets as gifts

If you give a pet, such as a large dog or a finicky cat to a person who is ill-prepared to care for her, you put the pet at risk. A child may neglect to feed or walk his new dog while an elderly person may struggle to keep the dog under control. Many gifted pets end up in shelters after the holidays because their new owners were unable to care for them. Worse still, some pets end up abandoned.

Even if you pick out a shelter pet, the costs of keeping the pet may be too expensive for the receiver. He'll have to pay for trips to the veterinary clinic as well as to spay and neuter the pet if that hasn't already occurred. In addition to visits to the animal vet clinic if the pet becomes ills, the owner will have to pay for food and grooming for his new pet.

At Churchland Animal Clinic, we are truly ‘committed to caring for your companions,’ and we want to help you make good choices for your pets. If you have any questions about pet care or pet health in general, please give us a call.

Instead of giving a pet as a gift this holiday season, what alternatives can you think of?

Preventative Care is Key

Posted on 2011-10-04 11:54:52

Caring for a new kitten or puppy is a big responsibility. It entails more than just setting out bowls of food and water. Conscientious pet owners understand the importance of creating wellness Portsmouth veterinarians provide pet wellness careplans for their pets. So does the veterinary staff at Churchland Animal Clinic in Portsmouth. Unlike many veterinary hospitals that focus solely on emergency treatments, our animal hospital places equal emphasis on preventative care. We want your puppies and kittens to grow into happy, healthy adults. It's why we offer wellness plans for both puppies and kittens. And it's why every veterinarian on our staff is equally committed to the long-term health of your pets.

We invite pet owners from the Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, Tidewater, and Suffolk areas to visit our animal vet clinic to determine if our puppy and kitten wellness plans are for them.

Four Wellness Strategies for Pets

The veterinarians at our animal hospital recommend four top wellness strategies to keep your puppies and kittens healthy. These strategies form the basis of our kitten and puppy wellness plans.

Proper care starts with core vaccinations. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your dog or cat receives the vaccinations it needs to fend off disease and live a happy life. Secondly, it's vitally important for pet owners to have their dogs or cats spayed or neutered. This not only protects their own animals, it prevents the population of cats and dogs from growing too quickly.

We also recommend pet owners have their puppies or kittens implanted with microchip identification. These chips significantly boost the odds that you will find your puppy or kitten quickly if it should become lost. The microchips are a key health factor: Puppies and kittens are not adept at living on their own. They can quickly become injured or sick if they remain lost from their families.

Finally, every veterinarian at our Portsmouth animal clinic recommends that you feed your puppy and kitten a healthy diet — no table scraps, please — and regularly check its teeth.

What measures do you think pet owners need to take to guarantee their pets are healthy for both the short-term and the long-term?

The Advantages of Boarding Your Pet at Our Clinic

Posted on 2011-09-12 18:31:54

pets_med.jpgAt Churchland Animal Clinic in Portsmouth, we know you have a choice when it comes to caring for your pet while you are out of town. There are, however, some distinct advantages that come with boarding your pet at our facility. The fact that we are convenient to Chesapeake, Tidewater, Suffolk and Hampton Roads is just one perk. Choosing to board your pet at our clinic affords you so many more benefits.

The Benefits of Pet Boarding at Our Animal Vet Clinic

Going out of town and leaving your pet behind can be stressful for the pet. You may think that leaving them at home in the care of a house or pet sitter is the best option, but it is not. Sure, the pet will be in their own environment, but pet or house sitters will only come by enough to see that the pet’s needs are taken care of. Your pet will become bored. Bored pets, with nothing to watch and little human interaction, can become destructive. Keeping them at our clinic while you are away will give them plenty to watch, and many humans with which to interact. We make sure they get enough play time and personal attention to keep them happy and stress-free.
Nobody wants to hear about their pet becoming ill while they are on vacation, but it does happen. Choosing to board your pet with us at Churchland Animal Clinic while you are away means that if your pet does become ill, then they are already in the best possible place. We will take compassionate and high quality care of your pet, and our veterinarian will keep you informed every step of the way. Do not risk having a pet sitter take your beloved pet to a different veterinary clinic in Portsmouth, leave the pets with us and let us take care of them.

Another perk of letting your pet vacation with us while you are away, is that we can take care of all the routine exams, vaccinations and wellness care while they are here. This means you do not need to schedule time from your busy schedule to bring your pet to our veterinary clinic.

Every pet loves to have a blanket or toy with them while they board with us. What sort of toy or thing does your pet enjoy having with them while they are boarded?

Understanding the Threat of Rabies and Benefit of Vaccinations

Posted on 2011-09-06 19:53:08

couch_puppy_med.jpgRabies is a contagious and deadly viral infection spread when infected saliva enters an animal through a bite or broken skin. Dogs and cats can contract this virus when they encounter a wild animal or another pet that has been infected.
The rabies virus will travel to the brain of an infected animal and trigger widespread inflammation. Rabies is particularly dangerous because those infected may fail to show symptoms for a long period of time but are still able to spread the disease to other animals and humans.
It is important that pet owners understand the dangers associated with this fatal, yet completely preventable disease. We also want to remind our readers that the rabies vaccination is required by law in the state of Virginia. Your pet can be protected from this virus and many other diseases with some very effective and inexpensive vaccines available at our Portsmouth animal vet clinic.

Vaccinations at Our Animal Vet Clinic Prevent Rabies and Other Dangerous Diseases

At Churchland Animal Clinic, we work hard to spread the word about the importance of pet vaccination to animal owners throughout Portsmouth, Chesapeak, Suffolk, Hampton Roads, and Tidewater. There are many dangerous animal illnesses that can spread rapidly in the pet population, most of which are completely preventable with routine vaccination at our veterinary hospital. Vaccines quickly and reliably provide your pet’s immune system with the antibodies necessary to ward off diseases like rabies if he or she is exposed to an infected animal. They are also very inexpensive when compared to the cost associated with treating a pet that has been infected with a disease like bordetella, parvovirus, coronavirus, or feline leukemia.

If your pet has not been vaccinated, or it has been over a year since your animal’s last round of shots, we hope you will visit our animal hospital as soon as possible.

What motivates you to get your pet the rabies vaccination or any of the other immunizations recommended by our veterinary clinic?
